1. God Forgives Us Through Grace
Forgiveness begins with God. The Bible teaches that God freely forgives sins when we repent and turn to Him.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”Psalm 103:12
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
👉 Forgiveness is not earned, it is given by God’s mercy.
2. We Are Commanded to Forgive Others
Jesus makes it clear that forgiving others is not optional for His followers.
Matthew 6:14–15
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive one another… Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
👉 We forgive because we have been forgiven.
3. Forgiveness Has No Limit
Peter once asked Jesus how many times he should forgive. Jesus’ answer shows that forgiveness should be ongoing.
Matthew 18:21–22
“I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
👉 This means forgiveness is a way of life, not a one-time act.
4. Forgiveness Frees the Heart
Unforgiveness leads to bitterness, while forgiveness brings healing and peace.
Ephesians 4:31–32
“Get rid of all bitterness… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other.”Hebrews 12:15
“See to it that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble.”
👉 Forgiveness is as much for your healing as it is for others.
5. Forgiveness Does Not Ignore Justice or Pain
The Bible does not say that forgiveness means pretending harm never happened. Jesus acknowledged pain, but still chose forgiveness.
Luke 23:34
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
👉 Forgiveness releases revenge to God and allows Him to bring justice.
6. Forgiveness Is Empowered by Love
True forgiveness flows from love and the help of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 13:5
“Love keeps no record of wrongs.”Romans 5:5
“God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”
👉 Forgiveness is often difficult, but God gives strength to do it.
A Simple Prayer for Forgiveness
